Step 1 – What type of Memorial to purchase?
The cemetery for your future headstone will likely dictate what type of memorial you can choose. Often there are limits to the type and size of stone you can place. Many cemeteries in the Salt Lake area require a cement border around your stone to protect it from lawn maintenance equipment. Considerations need to be verified with the cemetery officials in regards to size allowed, cement requirements, and if you can place an upright or can only use flat markers. Some cemeteries allow for vases, others do not.
Each cemetery has different regulations. We recommend that you call the cemetery first before shopping for a stone. If you are not in a position to check with your cemetery for the regulations yourself, we are happy to help you with that.

Step 2 – How do I choose the stone?
Most markers and monuments are made from granite because of its durability and beauty. Granite withstands weather changes very well, it is reasonably priced and it is available in a wide range of colors. We carry a large selection of flat markers, monuments, benches and slant uprights in multiple sizes. For a preview of granite colors, click on Granite Colors tab and please note that we have many more options available to you.
For custom, unusual shapes and over-sized markers, we will need to order this from a granite quarry supplier, most of whom are located outside of the United States. Upright monuments and benches are typically custom ordered for each individual family but we do have some available. Come visit us at our showroom in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Step 3 - What are my options for design and artwork?
Our design for your stone will combine your family’s wishes and our years of experience to help you select the perfect memorial layout design. We at Hans Monuments are well known for our beautiful shape carved engravings and original landscape scenery. Come see us so we can show you the difference between a 2-dimensional rose and a hand shape carved rose.
We have many different types of fonts, borders, religious symbols, floral options, animals, quotes, and landscapes to choose from. We can create CUSTOMIZED designs and can replicate a signature for your stone if wanted, as our owner John is a very talented artist (artist fees would apply). After gathering together your needs and info for the stone, we can show you a potential layout to visualize the finished memorial and then we will edit the design until it is perfect.

Step 4 – What is the average time frame to expect?
Purchasing a quality memorial stone can be a lengthy process with many steps. Remember that this important stone will last for your future generations, it needs to meet your family’s expectations and the stone engraving quality needs to be perfect. Memorial stones generally take 10 - 15 weeks from your approval & payment to the time of installation, if we have the stone in stock. Special orders can take up to 6 - 12 months. Winter and spring installations are dependent on the weather, snow and ground freeze.
We look forward to assisting your family with memorial.
